Compelling illustrations and graphics employing a companion app give access to never-seen before audiovisual content, paintings and augmented reality features which create a unique user experience.

Enlarging the scope of what is possible to showcase and the ability to update content, extends the lifespan and increases the sustainability of printed media. A book used as a gateway, rather than a box.
Image recognition assets
Embeded and humanistic
Trigger content from the book such as panoramic images in a spacial aware environment, interviews from photographs, or a specially designed riddle game based on Mediterranean Mythology.
Content inherent to the book’s indentity provides an enhanced engagement, a social and humanistic link between editors, scientific contributors and the user.
Code triggered assets
External and adaptable
Triggering of external functionalities such as the WEFE Nexus explanatory videos, world map locations, video interviews and further information on a given subject – such as the “Heads and Hearts”, “Lets Hear More” or “Video Clip” triggers – , links to PDFs regarding table of contents and citations.
Content is present not only in ubiquitous platforms such as Youtube or Google Maps but also the European Commission’s Klowledge Hub.

Three animations were created to explain the intricacies of the Water, Energy, Food, Ecosystem NEXUS.
The animations are located in key chapters of the book and highlight sensitive areas of understanding. A communication that transcends education, language, race or gender.

Alexandre Castro
Coder / Communication Designer
Alexandre Castro is a coder and communication designer who loves to expand his “knowledge-base” pretty much in the style of outlandish experimentation. From being an apprentice of a great design master, to having ran a makerspace, being an university teacher, doing music videos for kids, experimenting with electronics or woodworking it’s all about having a big bag of learning experiences from where to dig solutions to new problems.
Ricardo Silva
Visual Communication Designer
Specialist in non-verbal and visual communication on printed and non-printed media. Track-record in collaborating in multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional projects. Ricardo serves as the link between the content, the message and the output establishing priorities and designing a visual language that connects the user with the project’s core message.
Ricardo has study and worked in Lisbon, London, Amsterdam and Milan with clients ranging from Sony Music, Amnesty International and the European Commission.

Gustavo Maia
Motion Designer
Gustavo is a motion designer also working on 3D modeling, animation and video editing.
His work is usually focused on advertising for broadcast and web but also explanatory videos for products or services, corporate videos for internal communication, video-mapping, product 3D modeling and rendering.
Gustavo works closely with agencies and clients, such as Publicis, Leo Burnett, Fuel, BBDO, Universal Music, Galp, Santa Casa da Misericórdia.
Tools of choice: Cinema 4D, After Effects, Illustrator, Premiere, Photoshop, ZBrush, 3D Coat, Ableton Live
